Black Panther and Wakanda

When Black Panther arrived in 2018, it did more than break box-office records. Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring the late Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, the film imagined Wakanda, a hidden African nation that was never colonised and grew into the most advanced society on Earth. That idea of an Africa defined by innovation, not hardship, was a rare thing on a blockbuster screen.

  • Design and Afrofuturism: costume designer Ruth E. Carter drew on real African traditions, from Maasai beadwork to Himba and Zulu styles, and became the first Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for the film.
  • Sound: Ludwig GΓΆransson's Oscar-winning score blended orchestral music with West African instruments and artists, including Senegal's Baaba Maal.
  • Industry impact: it became the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture, and it showed studios that a Black-led, African-inspired story could succeed worldwide.
  • Language and culture: the film brought Xhosa, spoken in South Africa, to millions of viewers, and its "Wakanda Forever" salute became a global gesture of pride.

Nollywood: Nigeria's film industry

Nollywood began in the early 1990s with low-budget home videos and grew into one of the largest film industries in the world by number of films made. It tells stories in English, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, about family, faith, love and politics, and its films travel through streaming platforms and the African diaspora. In 2018, Lionheart, directed by Genevieve Nnaji, became Netflix's first Nigerian original film.

African cinema on the world stage

  • Ousmane SembΓ¨ne of Senegal is often called the father of African cinema, and his work inspired generations of filmmakers.
  • FESPACO, held in Burkina Faso, is one of the continent's biggest film festivals.
  • Tsotsi (South Africa) won the Oscar for Best International Feature in 2006, and Mati Diop's Atlantics (Senegal) won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2019.

Streaming and social media

Streaming services now commission African originals, such as South Africa's Queen Sono and Blood & Water, and African creators use YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to reach audiences directly. In 2020, South African producer Master KG's song Jerusalema sparked the worldwide "Jerusalema Challenge," with people from police stations to hospitals dancing to it. These creators are now telling their own stories to the world, in their own voices.
